Boat tours in the Gulf of Naples: which boat, which quay, what price

Five formats, not one price

Anybody searching for a “boat tour in Naples” is looking for five different things. Half an hour off the seafront costs €20 per person. Two hours along the Posillipo coast cost €45. A day out to Ischia and Procida on a shared boat costs €159. The same day with the boat to yourself, twelve passengers, costs €1,849 on the Amalfi Coast. A private yacht for eight hours starts at €1,700.

The right question is not what it costs but how many of you there are and how many hours you want to be on the water. Below four people, a seat on a shared tour always wins. Above eight, the whole boat costs less than the individual tickets.

The boats of the gulf, in practice

The gozzo is the boat of this sea: seven to ten metres of wood or fibreglass, a round hull, a slow engine, low in the water. It gets into the coves, goes close to the caves and does not force you to shout to be heard. VIVA CHARTER uses a gozzo of around eight metres for the trip round the island of Capri, three or four hours from Marina Grande, maximum seven people, soft drinks and snacks included and the Grotta Azzurra ticket excluded: the price is agreed for the boat, not per head.

The shared boat with nine or twelve seats is the commonest format in Naples. NapleSeaTour works this way from Borgo Marinari: short half-hour runs along the Parthenope waterfront at €20, the two-hour “full coast experience” at €45, a three-hour version at €75. The same boats can be taken whole: €200 for two hours, €220 for sunset, capacity always nine.

The catamaran or big boat turns up almost only in full-day packages to Capri, Ischia and the Amalfi Coast, where the price includes the coach from Naples. They are comfortable, they have toilets and shade, and they are the right choice with children or if you dislike small craft.

The charter yacht is the four-figure option. Naples Boat Experience publishes eight-hour days from €1,700 for Capri and for Ischia and Procida, from €2,000 for Sorrento, Nerano, Positano and Amalfi, skipper included and the itinerary settled on board.

The kayak is the only boat that needs no quay. Trentaremi takes you along the Posillipo coast with local guides: you see the Gaiola and the bay of Trentaremi from the water, at paddling pace, without engines.

Which quay you leave from

Borgo Marinari, via Luculliana, at the foot of Castel dell’Ovo: this is the base for city tours. NapleSeaTour and Seaside Napoli board here, ten minutes on foot from piazza del Plebiscito, and the castle above you is closed for works with no reopening date — the quay, however, works normally.

Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa: scheduled hydrofoils and ferries. These are not excursion quays, but this is where you start if your plan is a ferry plus a boat on the island.

Mergellina: careful here, the quay exists but traffic is very thin. SNAV uses it only for the seasonal fast link to the Aeolian Islands; sailings for Ischia, Procida and Capri leave from Beverello.

Port of Torre del Greco: some Amalfi Coast days sold by partners do not leave from Naples at all. The Amalfi, Positano and Ravello tour takes a coach from the centre at 7:40 and boards at Torre del Greco: if you pictured stepping onto a boat on the seafront, change the picture.

The Posillipo coast: snorkelling trips with a marine biologist start here, with swim stops off Villa Lauro and at a private beach, departures at 10:30 and 14:30 and a third run at 18:00 in summer.

Whatever the format, the exact meeting point is on your voucher. Naples quays look alike and the right pontoon can be fifty metres to the right.

The rule of the sea

The sea decides, not you and not the operator either. With a westerly wind and a swell running the trips are cancelled, and small boats are cancelled first. Three things to settle when you book.

First: who decides, and when. The skipper has the last word and usually says the evening before or on the morning itself.

Second: what you are owed. Operators with written policies reschedule or refund in full. Seaside Napoli, for example, lets you move a booking with no penalty up to fourteen days ahead, keeps 50% within fourteen days and 100% within seven, but still guarantees a full refund or a new date in bad weather.

Third: the minimum number of participants. Shared tours sail with at least four people and must be booked by 22:00 the day before. If the minimum is not reached, the operator tells you and proposes alternatives.

A note on the Grotta Azzurra: no tour can guarantee it. Getting in depends on the swell and on the queue of little boats, and honest packages list it as a conditional stop, not a fixed one. The entry price is not published on any reachable official site: capri.it puts it at around €19 per person, collected by a floating ticket office at the mouth of the cave.

Where to swim, and where not to

The gulf in front of Naples is cleaner than its reputation suggests, but it is not uniform. Tour swim stops cluster between Posillipo and the Gaiola on the city side, and in the coves of Capri, Ischia and Procida further out.

The Gaiola Marine Protected Area is the most delicate piece: access from land is free but must be booked online from May to September, in two slots (9–13 and 14–18), with a maximum of two hundred people. From the sea you take in the whole of it, with the arch and the Roman remains just under the surface.

Before you step aboard

Bring small change even if you paid online: some operators sell drinks or lunch on board and not all of them have a card reader at sea. Shoes you can take off, because on deck you go barefoot. Water-resistant sun cream and a light T-shirt: the glare off the water burns even in September.

Tipping is not compulsory in Italy and no serious operator builds it in: if the skipper has done a good job, ten euros is a gesture, not a duty. Finally, check two practical details before you pay: whether there is a toilet on board, which a seven-metre gozzo often does not have, and whether fuel is included in the price — on shared tours it usually is, on charters get it in writing.

Travelling with children, check the age limits: full-day tours will not take babies under one for safety reasons, while on short trips the limit operators give is often three years. Several companies charge half price up to the age of nine.

They are nearly all small businesses, with one or two boats and a skipper who is also the guide. The difference between them comes down to three things: capacity, clarity of price and bad-weather policy.

If the island matters to you more than the boat, first compare the cost of the crossing in Capri as a day trip and in Ischia and Procida as a day trip: sometimes the ferry plus a gozzo hired on the spot costs less than a package from Naples.
