Naples in the evening is a city that comes alive late and empties out area by area: on piazza Bellini things start at 9pm, in Chiaia at 10pm, on the seafront people are already strolling at 7pm. The hard part is not finding somewhere to go, it is getting home: public transport closes early and the night service is a single bus line.

One basic rule: pick your area according to where you are sleeping. Crossing Naples after 1am costs a taxi ride, and a taxi at night starts at €7.50 under the city tariff.

Old centre. Piazza Bellini, via San Sebastiano, vico San Pietro a Majella and largo Banchi Nuovi: all within three hundred metres, with the crowd staying out in the street. It is the cheapest area and the easiest to reach on foot from the centre. At weekends it is packed until the small hours.
Chiaia. The triangle between vico Belledonne a Chiaia, via Ferrigni and piazza dei Martiri is the cocktail and restaurant district. Higher prices, a more composed pace, wide pavements: the area that works best if you are eating out and do not want a late night.
Vomero. Via Aniello Falcone is a street of bars with a view, joined by piazza Vanvitelli and via Bernini. You get up there on the funiculars, which close before the evening ends: the Centrale runs up to 10:30pm on Monday and Tuesday, to 00:30 on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, to 2am on Friday and Saturday; the Chiaia does the reverse, 10:30pm on Wednesday and Thursday, 00:30 Sunday to Tuesday, 2am on Friday and Saturday; the Mergellina stops at 10pm; the Montesanto is closed for its twenty-year overhaul until further notice, with a replacement bus Vanvitelli–piazza Dante until 21:32. That leaves metro Line 1: last service from Centro Direzionale at 23:00 Sunday to Thursday, at 01:32 on Friday and Saturday (anm.it).
Seafront. Via Partenope and via Caracciolo are pedestrian: this is the city’s evening promenade, with the Borgo Marinari out on the point. Castel dell’Ovo is closed for works with no reopening date, but the quay and the Borgo restaurants are still the most scenic place to eat.

The times come from anm.it, eavsrl.it and trenitalia.com. Translated: if your evening ends after midnight and you are sleeping off the corso Umberto–Chiaia–Mergellina axis, budget for a taxi.
Taxis and getting home after the last run
The City of Naples tariff schedule sets the night and holiday flag fall at €7.50 and the minimum fare at €5. Some routes carry a fixed price that is worth asking for explicitly before you get in: old centre from Garibaldi or from the Beverello €11, airport–Garibaldi €21, airport–Beverello €24.
The fixed price has to be agreed at the start, not on arrival. If the driver starts the meter and your route is on the list, ask for the fixed fare before you move off: it is your right and drivers apply it without arguing.
For night transfers to the airport or the Amalfi Coast, a private driver booked in advance costs more than a taxi but gives you a firm time: the formats and rates are in private driver and NCC.
Three ready-made evenings
Old-centre evening, low budget. 7:30pm pizza on via dei Tribunali without booking, 9pm beer on piazza Bellini, 11pm a wander between via San Sebastiano and Port’Alba, home on foot or on the N1 from corso Umberto. Realistic spend: one pizza, two beers, no transport.
Seafront evening. 6:30pm walk from piazza Vittoria out towards the Borgo Marinari, 8pm dinner on the quay, 10pm ice cream at Mergellina, home on the N1 that runs along the Riviera di Chiaia. It works in winter too, on windless days.
Panoramic evening. Sunset from the Posillipo belvedere or from San Martino, dinner on the Vomero along via Aniello Falcone, taxi home. For the sunset by minivan there is a two-hour panoramic tour: it is shared, costs €52 per person, and the person with you is an English-speaking driver rather than a licensed guide. Knowing that, it is a comfortable way to see Posillipo without a car.
Evening tours that make sense
The tour that really changes an evening is the underground after closing: two hours in the tunnels of piazza San Gaetano with no groups around, at €45 per person. The official version on the operator’s own site is an evening departure on Thursdays at 9pm by booking, with a minimum of ten participants (napolisotterranea.org): if there are two of you, the partner tour is the only way in.
The second format is the evening food walk: two and a half hours of fried snacks, pizza a portafoglio and spritz, with very high ratings and prices from €39 per person. Count it as a full dinner, not an aperitivo: turn up hungry and expect five or six stops.

Who should pick what
What is closed in the evening
Almost every museum shuts in the afternoon: the MANN at 7:30pm, the Sansevero Chapel at 7pm with last entry 6:30pm, the Palazzo Reale at 8pm with last entry at 7pm. There is no regular evening opening, apart from the rare special openings announced by individual museums.
The exceptions are the underground routes with evening departures by booking, and walks in the open air: the seafront, the Plebiscito, the belvederes. If you want an indoor attraction, put it in the afternoon and leave the evening to food and to the city.
Transport towards the day-trip destinations stops too: the SITA buses come back from the Amalfi Coast in the afternoon and evening ferries are few. Always come home with an hour’s margin, as explained in getting around Naples.
Eating late (and where not to try)
The historic pizzerias in the centre close the till earlier than you would expect: on weekdays many stop serving between 10:30 and 11pm. If your dinner starts after 10pm, aim for the fry shops and takeaway pizzerias on via dei Tribunali and via Toledo, or for the seafront places, which run later.
A midnight meal in Naples means pizza a portafoglio and a cuoppo of fried food: they cost a few euros and are eaten standing up. It is also the most practical solution when you arrive by train in the evening and do not want to sit down at a table.
Booking pays off on Friday and Saturday in all four areas, and on Sunday evening in the restaurants of Chiaia and the Borgo Marinari, where several kitchens close early. In the old centre, by contrast, you almost always find somewhere by staying out in the street.
Summer changes the rules
From June to September the sun sets late and evening life moves outdoors: seafront, Mergellina, Posillipo and the terrace bars on the Vomero. In those months the stroll starts after 8pm and outside tables stay full until midnight.

Safety, without the scaremongering
The nightlife areas are full of people until late and are not a problem. The precautions are those of any large city: phone in your pocket rather than in your hand while you walk, no watches or chains on show, an eye out for the scooters that ride along the pavements of the lanes.
Two local points. Avoid the empty stretch between Stazione Centrale and the Duomo after midnight, and take the lit corso Umberto instead. And in the Quartieri Spagnoli, after dark, stay on the main streets: the stepped climb is the least frequented part, as described in Quartieri Spagnoli and Maradona.
In short
Naples at night is organised backwards: first decide how you get home, then where you go. With metro Line 2 closing shortly after 11pm and a single night bus, the most comfortable choice is to go out in the area where you are sleeping and keep twenty euros aside for a taxi.
If you have only one evening, the seafront and the old centre give you the most for the least moving about. If you would rather someone else organised it, a two-hour evening tour combines dinner or a visit and brings you back where you started.
