La Casa di Tourist: two tours, one ambiguous name

Unlike almost every competitor in the centre, it publishes its prices and keeps them low. The thing to settle is a different one: which underground route you are buying.

What it sells, with numbers

Two products have a complete listing. The Napoli Sotterranea tour costs €15 for adults, €7.90 for children from 6 to 12 and is free under 6; it lasts 1 hour 20, takes a maximum of 10 participants, leaves at 10, 12, 14 and 16:30 with an extra run at 18 at the weekend, is run in Italian and English and offers an audio guide in French or Spanish for €5 more. Stated minimum age 3, route unsuitable for anyone with mobility difficulties, pets allowed.

The Quartieri Spagnoli tour costs €25 for adults, €12 up to the age of 12, free under 6; it lasts 2 hours, leaves at 18 with a minimum booking of 4 people, meets at via Chiaia 216, and includes the entrance ticket, a guide in Italian and a map of the city. English is listed among the extra services to request, so it is not covered by the list price.

The rest of the catalogue — the Amalfi Coast by car with a driver, a boat to the islands, Pompeii, a Vespa ride, a walk through the old town — is promoted with no price and no practical listing: you send an enquiry. The site mentions working with licensed tourist guides without naming any, and publishes neither a VAT number nor a company name.

The name “Napoli Sotterranea” does not identify a place

This is the crux of the page. Under that label, in Naples, there are at least three different visits run by three different outfits: the piazza San Gaetano route, whose official online skip-the-line costs €18 for adults, €15 for students aged 11 to 24 and €10 for children aged 5 to 10, with departures every hour from 10 to 18 and a ticket that is neither refundable nor changeable; the tunnels under the Quartieri Spagnoli, meeting at the bar Gambrinus with the entrance at vico S. Anna di Palazzo 52, adults €15 and children aged 7 to 12 €7, departures at 10, 12, 14 and 16:30 on weekdays and more runs at the weekend; and the Galleria Borbonica, standard route €15, open Friday to Sunday and on public holidays at 10, 12, 15 and 17.

The price and times published by La Casa di Tourist match the second route, not the first; the stated duration is longer than the roughly 60 minutes given by the operator itself. That is not a problem in itself — that route is a fine one and it costs less — but it changes the visit completely, and the address you turn up at. So before you pay, ask three things in writing: the exact address of the entrance, the name of the operator running the site you will visit, and whether small children are really admitted, because the Quartieri Spagnoli route does not take under-sixes while the agency’s listing declares them free. What the site is missing

You buy online, without even registering, and pay by traceable means: that is the right way to buy, because it leaves proof. Two gaps remain, though. The terms-of-sale page contains no terms: it shows the placeholder of a shop under construction. And the privacy policy is the standard WordPress text, with no data controller. Free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead is stated on the home page: insist on having it written on the confirmation email too, with the date, the time, the meeting point and the company name.

On price the agency wins: €15 against €18 for the equivalent products off the shelf. In exchange you give up three things that matter more than three euros to a lot of people: written certainty about which route you are buying, standard cancellation with an automatic refund, and a platform to fall back on if the tour does not run.
