When to visit Naples depends on what you want to do: the city works twelve months of the year, the day trips do not. From mid-October to mid-March Pompeii closes at 5pm with last entry at 3:30pm, the Vesuvius crater at 3pm, and the fast links towards Positano and Amalfi stop. In exchange the museums are empty and prices collapse.
The best period of all is still the window from mid-April to early June, with October as a near-equivalent alternative. In those months the archaeological sites are on their long hours, the crater is open until 5pm and you can walk without the August heat. The official prices below are attributed to their source; tour prices are verified regularly.

The Gran Cono hours come from the rules of the Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio, which also caps the number of visitors per day: 3,240 in July and August, 2,880 in April, May, June and September, 2,520 in March and October, 2,160 in the winter months.
Spring: the season that pays off most
From 16 March Pompeii switches to its long hours, 9am–7pm with last entry at 5:30pm, and Herculaneum opens 8:30am–7:30pm with last entry at 6pm (pompeiisites.org, ercolano.cultura.gov.it). This is the moment when one day really is enough for the excavations plus Vesuvius.
From early April the fast links to the Amalfi Coast resume: NLG puts Naples–Positano at €32 and Naples–Amalfi at €32.50 into service for a season that runs to early November. The thermal parks on Ischia open in the second half of April: Giardini Poseidon asks €50 for a full day, Negombo starts from its low-season rates.
The one week to treat with care is Easter: hotels at their peak, full ferries and Pompeii with its time bands sold out. If you are coming then, book the named tickets as soon as sales open.
Summer: sea yes, excavations with judgement
July and August are the months for the sea and the islands: ferries at full capacity, thermal parks open, the Campi Flegrei beaches reachable on the EAV buses. The Vesuvius crater extends to 6pm and puts 3,240 places a day on sale, split into ten-minute bands: the shuttle logistics are in Vesuvius in a day.
The excavations, though, are a morning-only proposition in August. There is no shade at Pompeii, the paving throws the heat back and the summer time bands concentrate arrivals: go in at opening, come out by noon. Pompeii stays open even on the August bank holiday, with annual closures only on 25 December and 1 January.
One practical piece of advice: in summer choose the day trips that end in the water. A boat day around Ischia and Procida or the beaches described in beaches in Naples and the gulf handle the heat better than any visit on foot.
Autumn: the underrated window
October is the month with the best balance of climate, prices and opening hours. Until 14 October Pompeii and Herculaneum keep their long hours, then switch to the winter version; the crater drops to 9am–4pm. The sea holds up on windless days, above all on the Sorrento side.
From November the seasonal links fall away: the islands remain with Caremar and SNAV, while Positano and Amalfi are reached via Sorrento on the SITA Sud buses, which move to their autumn timetable. The hydrofoils to Sorrento also cut their sailings and in some weeks do not run on Saturdays and holidays.
It is worth noting that the Campania Express, the most comfortable tourist train for Pompeii and Sorrento, is currently suspended until further notice (eavsrl.it): when you plan an autumn day trip, count on the ordinary Circumvesuviana, as explained in Pompeii in a day.

Winter: the city at its best, the day trips at their weakest
From mid-October to mid-March Pompeii opens 9am–5pm with last entry at 3:30pm and Herculaneum 8:30am–5pm with last entry at 3:30pm. The Gran Cono closes at 3pm, and in bad weather the path is shut, with automatic refunds for the tickets in the affected bands.
In exchange the underground routes and the museums become the strong point: the catacombs sit between 15 and 22 degrees all year, the hypogeal routes do not depend on the weather and the MANN galleries are empty; the comparison of the four underground sites is in Naples Underground. Christmas, on the other hand, fills San Gregorio Armeno, the street of the nativity-figure workshops, which from late November can only be walked at a shuffle.
Watch out for two seasonal closures: the Castello Aragonese on Ischia stays closed from 7 January to early March, and many beach clubs and thermal parks do not open. The islands can be visited anyway: the Caremar ferries run all year, with Procida from €12.70.

The closing days matter more than the season: the MANN, the Sansevero Chapel and the Reggia di Caserta close on Tuesday, the Palazzo Reale on Wednesday, the Catacombs of San Gennaro on Wednesday. A badly planned Tuesday burns half a holiday, and the pass calendar is explained in tickets and passes.
Events that move your day around
San Gennaro, 19 September. The cathedral stays open from 7:30am to 9pm and at 10am the safe holding the ampoules is opened at the solemn mass led by the archbishop; the evening before there is first vespers at 6pm (chiesadinapoli.it). The Duomo is full all day: if you want to get in, arrive before 9am.
First Sundays of the month. Pompeii, Herculaneum and the state museums are free. Good for your wallet, terrible for queues: if you have only one day for the excavations, pay for the ticket and go on any other day.
Christmas and nativity scenes. From late November to January San Gregorio Armeno and the old centre are the main reason to come: markets, artisan workshops, a city full in the evening. Hotels climb between 23 December and 6 January.
The August bank holiday. A city half emptied of residents and full of visitors, many restaurants closed, archaeological sites open. It works if you accept spending the time by the sea and visiting the excavations at opening time.
When to book, in order
Three tickets genuinely sell out: the Gran Cono of Vesuvius, sold online only thirty days ahead with fifty places every ten minutes; Pompeii, with named tickets and summer time bands; and the Sansevero Chapel, where the slots vanish on high-season weekends.
The rest can be decided on the spot, with two seasonal exceptions: the Catacombs of San Gennaro always require a booking, and the boat days in July and August fill up a few days ahead. For the crossings to Capri in a day and to Ischia and Procida it is enough to reach the quay with half an hour to spare.

When to visit Naples comes down to a choice between two windows: spring and October if Pompeii, Vesuvius and the Amalfi Coast are your target; July and August only if the sea is. Winter still works for the city, the museums and the subsoil, at prices no other month comes close to.
Whichever month you choose, the variable that decides the day is the wind for the sea and the closing time for the archaeological sites. Check both the evening before and book your crater band well in advance.
